Hello Hello. How are you? Considering the situation, take some time to ask yourself how you really are. We decided to focus this week’s blog post on you, and radiating some positive thoughts during this difficult time. Stopping Normality We are living in such a surreal moment in time as everything around us is closing; restaurants, shops, schools, offices and more. It feels like we’re at war, but this time is a different kind of war- one that affects everyone in the world no matter position or status. Changemakers 2020: Catherine Conway’s Zero Waste Business

Photo Credit: Max Diamond January’s edition of The Big Issue focuses on the Top 100 Changemakers in 2020. I was interested in finding an inspiring pioneer dealing with current environmental problems and discovered Catherine Conway, an amazing woman changing views on plastic packaging to improve ocean waste and sustainable living. From Market Stall to Pioneering Business In her 20s, Catherine became aware of the problem of plastic packaging, water pollution and waste accumulation. As an early adopter, she opened a small market stall in London selling unpackaged dry food and goods-from rice to cleaning products. There was interest right from the start. People with the same mindset as Catherine would bring […]

Inspiring & Impactful: Lucia Mudima

RubyMoon empowers women through small loans to help them start or grow their own business. We do this through Lendwithcare.org where we select the women we invest in, who have stories that inspire us. Some of our garments are named after these women- take Lucia for example: Our bestselling Lucia boy shorts are comfortable, soft, stretchy, vegan, durable as well as chlorine, sunlight and saltwater resistant. But behind this garment hides the protagonist of the show: Lucia. Lucia Mudima is a widow living in the Mandeya area of Honde Valley in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Before she could access her loan, she undertook financial training at Thrive Microfinance, enabling […]

New Year Resolutions It’s 10 days in,  the holidays are over and the much awaited festive season has come and gone in a blink of an eye. It’s back to work, but it’s not all bad! A new year has begun, with new resolutions and goals for short-term or long-term achievements and fulfilling aspirations. What did you choose? To start a new hobby, get a new job or pursue a healthier lifestyle? Are Black Friday bargains worth it?

Who doesn’t love snagging a good bargain? Saving a few quid here and there? You’d be crazy not to love Black Friday’s insane deals, right? But ask yourself, are bargains worth the environmental impact of overconsumption and impulse buying so central to Black Friday’s success?  The answer is no, in case anyone had doubts. Popular fashion retailers spend massive amounts of time, energy, and money to lure you in during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Many of these retailers, including Vero Moda, C&A, Forever 21 and Esprit rely heavily on synthetic materials such as polyester to make some of their garments. Here are just a few of the ways in […]

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN FOR PLASTIC FREE PERIODS

In the run up to Environmenstrual Week, City to Sea are running a video and digital campaign highlighting the connection between our ocean, plastic pollution and our periods. Their dramatic and stylish short film is produced by 2 female directors and features sports-women on the water. By amplifying the voices of sportswomen leading the way in sport and female empowerment, they can highlight one simple way that people can reduce single-use plastic in their lives. After releasing their awareness-raising film they will be carrying out a retailer campaign, putting pressure on high-street chains to increase access to-and availability of plastic-free period products on the high-street. City to Sea is an environmental, not-for-profit organisation campaigning to stop plastic pollution –from the city to our […]

Brighton Pride: a LGBTQ protest or a commercial pile of rubbish?

To Party or To Protest?’ The highly anticipated Brighton Pride took place last weekend and I was among the 250,000 people who attended the annual event, commemorating the fight for the human rights of the LGBTQ community. Shortly after the rainbow parade of self expression, Brighton was left covered in gas canisters and plastic trash. There was hardly any indication of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that ignited the original protest that paved the way for LGBTQ political activism. It seems that, increasingly Brighton Pride has become a commodified booze boat for the world to sail away in- without acknowledging that Pride is in fact […]
