RUBYMOON GOES TO | PORTO, PORTUGAL

Famous for it’s six beautiful bridges, Port wine and a gateway to the beautiful beaches of Northern Portugal, Porto provides perfect getaway for a long weekend.

Stay in Ribiera as close to the Douro river as you can, and cross over the D. Luis bridge to explore Gaia and see the great view of the old houses and narrow streets from the other side.

Whilst there, visit Taylors Port House, overlooking the river, and share a bottle with a platter of cheeses and nuts, from €16.

Catch the 201 bus to the Serralves Foundation for an afternoon in a gorgeous park, a pink Art Deco villa and a museum of contemporary art. On the way, stop at Tupi Pastelaria, Rua Sa da Bandeira, 144 to collect the excellent custard tarts and savouries for the journey.

Back in Ribiera, take the funicular up the hill, stroll around and then on your way back down, have a grilled sardine dinner at Grade A, Rua de San Nicholas washed down with vino verde, from €8 per bottle. Afterwards taste the selection of the different wines and regions of Portugal at Wine Quay, Cais de Ribiera.

On the Gaia side, the terrace bar with a view, on the roof of Edificio Porto Cruz, Terrace Lounge 360, Largo Miguel Bombarda 23, lends itself to cocktail treats from €6 each.

Hire a bike for €10/day from Dragon Tours, next to the funicular, and spend the day on the cycle track that takes you round the estuary to reach 17km of blue flag beaches, the Praias Gaia. Enjoy a seafood tapas lunch at the beach side restaurants and then take the ferry back across the river for €2.50 next to the marina.

Enjoy!
