Fit For Our Future?

New Year Resolutions It’s 10 days in,  the holidays are over and the much awaited festive season has come and gone in a blink of an eye. It’s back to work, but it’s not all bad! A new year has begun, with new resolutions and goals for short-term or long-term achievements and fulfilling aspirations. What did you choose? To start a new hobby, get a new job or pursue a healthier lifestyle? The most popular new year resolutions involve some sort of well-being goal: lose weight, exercise and/or eat healthier.  This is because after days on end of constant drinking, eating and sleeping people tend to realize that it’s time […]

Trends_1

Trends are dead. Long live trends.

“Fashion” can be defined as a variety of things. Originating from the French “façon”, “la manière”, meaning “a certain way”, “style, manner” it is used to describe many different aspects of today’s culture. Most agree that the term fashion describes a certain change. In our society, it is most commonly associated with clothing. This is (in part) due to the nature of the industry. The process of producing garments – from design to sale, is much quicker and cheaper compared to the automobile or furniture industry, for example. This is also the reason why (primarily in western countries) clothing fashions are actually designed to have a short lifespan. This development […]

#RubyMoonMindfulSwim

To celebrate the crescent moon on August 7th (the same moon that is featured in our logo), we decided to gather a few enthusiastic swimmers for our first ever #RubyMoonMindfulSwim – a mindfulness session followed by a swim in the ocean. Our meeting point, the Brighton bandstand, was taken over by some salsa dancers and so we moved further down the beach to a quieter spot to begin our conscious breathing experience led by Dawn Wilson. Dawn is a hypnotherapist and healthy food chef who has studies a range of holistic practices and cognitive therapies. More recently she has focussed on breathing techniques to unleash the power of the conscious […]

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Who Made Your Clothes?

For Fashion Revolution week I wanted to share a recent visit to the Tenement Museum in Manhattan – Founded in 1988 by historian Ruth Abram and social activist Anita Jacobsen, the museum tours explore the uniquely American story of immigration and the rich, diverse landscape it continues to create. The Museum took root when Abram and Jacobsen discovered 97 Orchard Street — a dilapidated tenement building that had been shuttered for more than 50 years. Although in ruins, many of the personal artifacts of the generations that lived there remain and a whole series of tours have been developed around the inhabitants and their histories. One such tour is called […]

AUB Human Bourenmouth

Arts University Bournemouth- THE ‘HUMAN’ SYMPOSIUM

On March 5th, Our Founder Jo Godden, was invited to talk at the AUB ‘Human’ Symposium at their campus in Poole. This was an amazing opportunity to talk to students about ‘Circles of Impact- How the circular economy can be applied to Fashion & Textiles.’   There were some interesting presentations and here are some of them: Wouldn’t it be great if everyone worked together to make the world a little greener?  Chloe Harty, Vice President, AUBSU   Inspired to hear about how the Student Union at AUB is incorporating green thinking into practise with a ‘green week’, a zero-waste marketplace and an eco-brick project that educates about single use plastic […]

CREATING CIRCLES OF POSITIVE IMPACT

Using Circular Economy to design products and businesses that benefit both people and our planet. Alexandra Reece investigates. Clothes are a fundamental part of our everyday life, used by many as a form of self-expression, but clothes are also killing our planet. In the current linear textiles economy, total greenhouse gas emissions from textile production amount to 1.2 billion tonnes annually, more than those of all international flights and maritime shipping combined (1). The Environmental Audit Committee’s recent ‘Fixing Fashion’ report has brought the idea of a need for systemic change in the fashion industry to the mainstream. A new economic model is necessary for fashion to end an era […]

The True Cost of Fur

Winter is on its way which means the high street is filling up with fur trimmed coats, bobble hats and other items with supposedly faux fur additions. Unfortunately, a lot of these items are coming from factories in China and other countries where there are less regulations regarding animal welfare and the use of fur products. This has led to an influx of real fur items being labelled and sold as faux fur. Shops that have been selling real fur mislabelled as faux fur include Missguided, Debenhams, Forever 21 and House of Fraser. There are also a lot of stores that are happily selling real fur. Canada Goose for example, […]
