Love Yourself! Love Our Planet! Celebrate Valentine’s Day Mindfully!

Valentine’s Day is hear again! A day dedicated to showing love and gratitude to the special people in your life.

But I can’t imagine anything more special than the environment. The earth has nourished humans from the beginning of time, maybe it’s time to return some of that love?

Giving gifts on valentine’s day, has a disturbingly large environmental impact- from single use plastic decorations to shipping items from around the world. We are drowning in plastic waste and it’s easy to feel hopeless about how we can change our habits for the better but there are many ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day sustainably whist also showing your significant others some love.

Cards, chocolate, and flowers are all popular gifts for that special someone, but what happens when the cards are thrown away, the chocolate is gobbled up, and the flowers have shrivelled up? Here are some alternative ideas  to make a lasting impression while also benefiting the all of us and our planet:

Flowers

Flowers are Valentine’s favourite. But the flower industry has a negative impact on the people who work on the farms and on the environment. If you’re thinking getting flowers this Valentine’s Day, maybe switch those out for potted plants instead.  It’s a great way to enhance a room and can be an excellent gift if your significant other has a green thumb, and there are a ton of plants that have flowers and buds too.

Experiences

Instead of buying more things, you could opt to gift an experience instead, for example, show some love for your local theatre by seeing a show together.  You could also see a movie together or have a night out together. Show some support to local restaurant and go out for dinner. If you’re looking for a more budget friendly option, explore all that mother nature has to offer- go for a hike, pack a picnic or go for a swim. You could also make special memories having a date night at home.

Jewellery

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but they’re not on speaking terms with the environment. Before buying jewellery, take a moment to question where the materials used in it come from. If you want to give jewellery, we recommend looking for pieces made by local, independent artists made from lab-grown gems or other materials. This may make it easier to learn where materials are sourced or look for organisations that do good with their products for something a little different. 4Ocean creates simple and elegant bracelets from recycled ocean plastic.
