Female eXXpedition Fights Plastic Epidemic

Guest post from Lily Stuart In December 2019, I was lucky enough to join Leg 5 of eXXpedition Round the World supported with swimwear from RubyMoon. eXXpedition’s goal is to make the unseen seen by creating a global ocean plastic data set and promoting women in STEM. Leg 5 sailed from Aruba to Panama taking samples of ocean plastic and learning about the challenges small island nations face with waste management. The eXXpedition Round the World science programme applies the same methods and controls the world over to give a clearer picture of the challenge we face. The sampling focuses not only on surface plastic but also that in the […]

Inspiring & Impactful: Lucia Mudima

RubyMoon empowers women through small loans to help them start or grow their own business. We do this through Lendwithcare.org where we select the women we invest in, who have stories that inspire us. Some of our garments are named after these women- take Lucia for example: Our bestselling Lucia boy shorts are comfortable, soft, stretchy, vegan, durable as well as chlorine, sunlight and saltwater resistant. But behind this garment hides the protagonist of the show: Lucia. Lucia Mudima is a widow living in the Mandeya area of Honde Valley in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Before she could access her loan, she undertook financial training at Thrive Microfinance, enabling […]

Trends_1

Trends are dead. Long live trends.

“Fashion” can be defined as a variety of things. Originating from the French “façon”, “la manière”, meaning “a certain way”, “style, manner” it is used to describe many different aspects of today’s culture. Most agree that the term fashion describes a certain change. In our society, it is most commonly associated with clothing. This is (in part) due to the nature of the industry. The process of producing garments – from design to sale, is much quicker and cheaper compared to the automobile or furniture industry, for example. This is also the reason why (primarily in western countries) clothing fashions are actually designed to have a short lifespan. This development […]

Boycott_1

To boycott or not to boycott? – That is the question

With the fashion industry producing nearly 100 billion pieces of clothing each year, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the largest contributors to global warming. The UN recently reported that the unprecedented rate and scale of climate change could be more catastrophic to the world than previously predicted. The Facts This week our colleague Jessica researched the extensive damage that the fashion industry is doing to our environment and what we can do to transform consumer behaviour. Here are some of the shocking statistics: Did you know? The fashion industry uses around 98 million tonnes of non-renewable resources each year. More than 1 million tonnes of materials are wasted […]

Circular economy

CREATING CIRCLES OF POSITIVE IMPACT

Using Circular Economy to design products and businesses that benefit both people and our planet. Alexandra Reece investigates. Clothes are a fundamental part of our everyday life, used by many as a form of self-expression, but clothes are also killing our planet. In the current linear textiles economy, total greenhouse gas emissions from textile production amount to 1.2 billion tonnes annually, more than those of all international flights and maritime shipping combined (1). The Environmental Audit Committee’s recent ‘Fixing Fashion’ report has brought the idea of a need for systemic change in the fashion industry to the mainstream. A new economic model is necessary for fashion to end an era […]

HOW FAIR ARE YOU?

Sometimes people and places can really inspire us. As an Italian on the Erasmus programme, this is my second week in Brighton and I have learnt so much! Particularly when I met the very personable Siobhan Wilson, owner of the Fair Shop, in Queens Road, Brighton and I interviewed her on a busy afternoon in between customers. To understand Siobhan and the ideology behind her store it is important to understand the “Fair Lifestyle’.     Siobhan opened her shop with other 3 partners in 2008 as a pop-up store that never closed! With a background in humanity and development, Siobhan had become to be interested in fair trade since […]

“Who has my money helped?”: Our recent LendWithCare successes

As you may know, RubyMoon is actually a not-for-profit organisation. The money we generate from sales of our swimwear goes entirely to women entrepreneurs in developing countries as loans to help them either start or grow their businesses, as a means of helping them to help themselves. When the loans come back, we can then put them towards producing more swimwear or re-loan the money to others who need it. We focus on women, as they are seen as the ‘change agents’ of the family –meaning they are the ones who are more likely to use the money for the good of their family. Women spend a larger proportion of […]
