WELCOME TO 2016! THE YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE FASHION!

2016 is already being hailed the ‘year of sustainable fashion’, which RubyMoon is passionate to be a part of! The design of quality long-lasting sustainable products is part of the RubyMoon mission. The fashion industry is under the spotlight as sadly one of the most polluting and unethical in terms of production, waste and exploitation. However more than ever designers and consumers are determined that it is a must for our clothing production to be socially responsible. Fashion revolution day and the #whomademyclothes campaign to commemorate the tragedy of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh shows how we can all fight to implement positive change in the fashion industry.

Thunderclap

More and more brands are stepping up to provide both fashion-forward and environmentally and socially conscious clothing. Eco-friendly products are steadily reaching the shelves as responsible fashion becomes increasingly mainstream. So take a look at some of the trends and projects set to be big for sustainable fashion and textiles in 2016:

MAKING OLD FROM NEW

Another huge movement in fashion this year is the rise of organisations recognising and harnessing the necessity of recycling the waste the industry is producing. More organisations are devoting time and energy into working out how to use fabric waste for the next level of production. Start-up EVRNU have developed technology which breaks down old fabric to create new fibres to eliminate waste in the production process! To learn more check out our blogpost …..

Many smaller clothing companies (particularly stateside) are scaling down their supply chain by sourcing material exclusively from ‘deadstock’ from either their own business or larger fashion houses. Check out online shops like Christy Dawn https://christydawn.com/ or LOOMSTATE http://www.loomstate.org/ who mass produce clothing striving towards ‘closed-loop product life cycles, reusing their dead material and practicing eco-friendly garment making techniques. Although it’s hard to tick all the boxes for sustainable and socially conscious fashion, some designers are really doing their part to change fashion for good!

CLEANING UP THE SEA

It is estimated that there is 269,000 tons of plastic clogging our sea-beds, a true disaster for the future of our oceans. This is why RubyMoon along with other brands have become part of the mission to clean-up the seas by sourcing nylon from fishing nets collected by Healthy Seas, an organisation recycling marine waste. Upcycling ocean plastic is an eco-practise being taken on by larger brands too, for instance ECOALF, the Madrid-based brand developing specific technology to recycle waste into new fibres. Fishing nets, plastic bottles, worn out tires, cotton waste, you name it ECOALF are recycling it!

2016 will also see the beginning of The Ocean Cleanup project, a huge floating structure 100 km long aiming to collect plastic from the seabed! See our blogpost for more! …

MATERIAL INNOVATION

Substituting unsustainable or environmentally harmful materials we use in production is another must for fashion development and this year will see some big changes. There are many environmentally preferable materials being brought to a larger clothes market such as hemp, a durable material with a long lifespan and able to be farmed sustainably.

We’ve done some research into a new material in production made from Pineapple leaf fibres! Check out our blogpost to find out more!
